Thailand Organizes Grand Opening of 2013 Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications
BANGKOK, THAILAND. On 27 March 2013, HRH Princess Sirindhorn graciously presided over the grand opening of the 2013 Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications in Bangkok. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organizes the international symposium every 2 years and invites the member states to take turn as the co-host. This year WIPO has honored Thailand to co-host the significant symposium as she is considered to be an active country involved with the intellectual property rights protection of GI goods. Thailand, by Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) under the Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with WIPO held the grand opening of 2013 Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications with an impressive scenario.
About 400 participants from 63 member states and delegations from related Thai agencies join the event. It is expected that the conference will be a stage for the exchange of new knowledge and experiences enhancing the future of Geographical Indications (GI) merchandise in the global stage. To be highlighted at the event are GI products from ASEAN and Asia-Pacific countries. It is believed that Thailand’s geographical strengths in conjunction with its local wisdom will add value to its GI goods leading to their commercialization and business growth in global market in the long-run. Ultimately, Thailand will become a champion country with respect to GI in the Southeast Asian region.
Local agricultural products and handicrafts which have been GI-registered were featured alongside items from the European Union, Asean countries and Japan.They include hom mali jasmine rice from Thung Kula Ronghai, Sangyod rice from Phatthalung, som-o khaw yai pomelo from Samut Songkhram, mapraw namhom coconut from Mae Klong, Doi Tung coffee, praewa Thai silk from Kalasin, Ban Chiang pottery, Bor Sang umbrellas, Chiang Mai celadon, Koh Kret pottery, Phurua Plateau wine and much more.
