TFPC takes action to stop illegal practice in Fishery Industry

Thai Fisheries Production Coalition (TFPC) together with The Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand will organize an event titled “Stop Illegal Labor in the Fishery Industry” on Nov. 11, 2013 at Centara Grand at Central World Hotel. This particular event will lead by the Prime Minister herself and it its aimed to create a comprehensive public awareness that informs the international community about Thailand’s commitment to solve its human trafficking, child labor and force labor problems especially in fishery industry. During the event, both public and private sectors will announce their joint initiative to purchase only goods from registered vessels of the Thai Oversee Fisheries Association and The National Fisheries Association of Thailand and to stop illegal labor practice of any kind.

TFPC was established by 8 private organizations in fishery industry which are Thai Frozen Food Association, Thai Shrimp Association, Thai Food Processors Association, Thai Tuna Industry Association, Thai Feed Mill Association, Thai Fishmeal Producers Association, Thai Oversee Fisheries Association and The National Fisheries Association of Thailand to combat the use of illegal labor practice throughout the fishery supply chain.

This action reaffirms Thailand’s continued response to the global accusation of abusive Thai labor practice. Trafficking in Person Report by the US Department of State ranked Thailand in the tier 2 watch list for 4 years consecutively, with high potential to lower to tier 3 in the upcoming year unless serious actions are taken by Thai Government.

Currently Thai fishery industry comprise of over 1 million employees which generate approximately $8,000 million income every year and is roughly about 3.5% of Thai total export.
